Join the BLUE BACK BOOK BREAK group (or "The B4s" for short) at the Noah Webster Library (Main Library).

Beginning Monday, March 3, the group will gather at 12:15 to suggest good books. The group will continue to meet on the first and third Monday every month at 12:15 to continue the discussion. Everyone is invited.

Free coffee will be provided by Barnes & Noble, and there will be a dessert, too.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS... Select one book you have read, have enjoyed, and would like to recommend to others. Any book will do, old or new, fiction or non-fiction, as long as it's a good one. But keep your book selection a secret! Bring your book with you, but keep it concealed. When it's your turn, you'll unveil it, and then have about five minutes to share the joys of your book with others.

A running list of all recommended books will be kept. If you don't have a book to recommend, please come anyway. There is a really good chance you'll leave knowing what book you want to read next!

Who Will Recognize You?

If you have ever fantasized about being Ernest Hemingway, Daisy Buchanan, or even Harry Potter, now is your chance to fulfill your dreams. You can dress in that perfect white suit and transform yourself into Tom Wolfe or Hartford’s own Mark Twain.

How is this possible?
For one magical evening you can emulate your favorite literary figure at the first annual Literary Ball.

The evening will feature a catered dinner, silent auction, music and dancing, and surprise literary themed activities. Rumor has it that Hester Prynne and the Invisible Man are being considered, but perhaps you see yourself as the stylish Tina Brown or Will Shakespeare

Proceeds will benefit the West Hartford Library.

So, mark your calendars, gather your friends, neighbors, book club members and start thinking... Who will you be?

Comments from May 31, 2007, meeting

• Give the library a list of books that will be read during the year in, say, September. Then, perhaps, the library can bank titles that will be in demand.
• Access to discussion topics for a given book would be useful. The ones provided by the publishers are sometimes juvenile. The library does have a link to book discussion topics:

• How many clubs are there in West Hartford or with West Hartford members? [over 60 and counting!]
• Can the library help us get authors to town?

o This already happens through The Friends of the Library in April annually.
o Book clubs should get themselves onto the library listserve; see:

o One group (Karin Stahl?) has had conference calls with authors.

• They prepare questions so that the conversation flows.
• Authors enjoy it.
• Check author and publisher websites for contact information

o Library also has writers groups: poetry, fiction, memoirs, screenwriters:

• Can there be a book club librarian who notes what is on the lists, gathers the books, provides the professional contact with the library
